'Hawkeye'-style technology to be used for photo finishes

ALASTAIR DOWN'S suggestion in Tuesday's Racing Post, that tight photo-finishes could be dramatised by the use of a system similar to the 'Hawkeye' line-call pictures shown on big screens at Wimbledon, is set to be taken up.

Newmarket's managing director Stephen Wallis is already working on developing such a process, with a prototype undergoing tests involving RaceTech, and he hopes to engage racegoers visually in the suspense surrounding the judge's decision.

John Maxse, responsible for PR at Jockey Club Racecourses, which owns Newmarket, said yesterday: "The delivery of the photo-finish verdict via the big screens is a good idea and I know it is something that Stephen Wallis at Newmarket has been exploring, together with BHA judge Alistair Stewart.
"The aim is to maintain the integrity of the decision-making process, while increasing the drama and excitement of the announcement."

Arena Leisure is also in the formative stages of developing a method of enhancing the drama of photo-finishes.

Kate Hills, their head of marketing and PR, said: "We already show replays in slow motion and the freeze-frame on big screens, and there's work ongoing to develop that further."
