YORKSHIRE OAKS

Ice Queen heads O'Brien's Yorkshire Oaks team

Racing Post staff

IRISH OAKS runner-up Ice Queen spearheads a three-strong Aidan O'Brien challenge in Thursday's Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York.

The wet weather and testing ground has seen the likes of Lush Lashes and Promising Lead sidestep the mile-and-a-half feature, but O'Brien still sends a sizeable team as he searches for yet more Group 1 glory.

Ice Queen was beaten just a short head by stablemate Moonstone at the Curragh and she will be joined by Oaks sixth Adored and ninth Honoria on the Knavesmire.

Passage Of Time, a Group 1 winner at two for Henry Cecil, leads the home defence along with last year's Prix Royal-Oak heroine Allegretto, trained by Sir Michael Stoute.

John Gosden will be double-handed with Dar Re Mi and Michita, while Peter Chapple-Hyam's Cape Amber completes the line-up.

YORK on Wednesday has been abandoned!!

York forced to abandon day two of Ebor meeting

Press Association Sport

YORK have been forced to abandon the second day of the prestigious Ebor meeting as conditions at the track have not improved.

Heavy rain over the weekend left areas of the course waterlogged, prompting an inspection at 8.30am on Tuesday morning.

That check showed the track to be unraceable and clerk of the course William Derby called a 4pm inspection ahead of Wednesday's meeting.

However, Derby was forced to concede defeat once again, this time on a card which was due to feature the Totesport Ebor.

A 12pm inspection will be held on Wednesday to assess prospects for Thursday.
Staff at York had worked throughout the day in a bid to ensurethe track would not lose the second card of their four-day meeting. However, their efforts were in vain with more rain set to fall.

York's head of marketing James Brennan explained: "We have made an early decision given the rain that has fallen in the last hour to abandon tomorrow's card.

"The Met Office have also issued a severe weather warning for the Yorkshire area for the next few hours and we deeply regret abandoning tomorrow.

"There will be a noon inspection tomorrow for the prospects of racing for Thursday and Friday, and we are sitting down now with all parties to work out a race programme for those two days."

EBOR Handicap

MAD RUSH has been all the rage for Wednesdays EBOR; BUT in Heavy conditions carrying top weight it may be a big ask for the horse. A good draw would help him while a bad draw may scupper his chances.

Heavy ground sees Mad Rush go clear as Ebor favourite

Anita Chambers

MAD RUSH is the clear favourite for Wednesday's Totesport Ebor after the heavy ground at York saw a number of leading fancies ruled out.

The sponsors make Luca Cumani's charge their 5-1 market leader after the Newmarket trainer was forced to withdraw the well-fancied pair of Bauer and Sanbuch at the final declaration stage.

They were two of the most noteworthy absentees along with Sir Michael Stoute'sSugar Ray and the John Queally-trained Al Eile.

Cumani said: "They're both fine but they just won't like the ground as testing as it will be on Wednesday. They're not soft-ground horses."

Mad Rush has been one of the leading lights in the betting for Europe's richest handicap since his convincing success in the ultra-competitive Old Newton Cup at Haydock last month.

The four-year-old was a four-length winner over Young Mick on easy ground that day but Mad Rush will be on 9lb worse terms at York.

"He's a big, strong horse and he's won on soft ground before, so let's hope he can handle it on Wednesday," said Cumani.

"It is a big ask (from top weight) and he does have to give quite a bit of weight to Young Mick but everything is a worry whenyou're taking on 19 others horses."

The Henry Cecil-trained Ajaan has also been well supported as he has already shown he can handle easy ground when winning at Newmarket earlier in the year.
"The distance should suit him, as should the ground conditions," said Alan Cooper, racing manager to owners the Niarchos Family.

"Obviously it's one of the most competitive races of its type of the year and we'll just have to see how much luck we get.

"We went a bit too far in trip withhim at Ascot and things don't go quite right the next time at Sandown, but conditions look right for a good run - although this is one of the toughest handicaps."

Sir Mark Prescott's Wicked Daze and George Margarson's Young Mick, who finished third two years ago, are also well fancied and the sponsors would prefer if neither of the pair came out on top.

Totesport spokesman Damian Walker said: "Our worst two ante-post results are 8-1 chances Young Mick and Wicked Daze, but Young Mick has shown his best form on fast ground, while Wicked Daze has yet to race on anything softer than good ground.

"Ante-post punters have no going worries about Mad Rush, who showed he relishes soft ground when an easy winner of the Old Newton Cup and we have cut his odds to 5-1 from 7-1.

"He was our 10-1 favourite when we opened betting on the race on July 14 and looks certain to start favourite on the day.

"Henry Cecil's Ajaan is another soft-ground performer who has been clipped in our betting andhe is 10-1 from 14-1, having been available at 20-1 last week."

JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL

From what I have seen and read so far,

If the ground comes up on the soft side it would NOT suit the 4/6fav Duke of Marmalade whose wins have come on Good/Fast ground.

New Approach @ 7/2 however prefers soft conditions and his stamina over further would also come into play in softer going.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19 August update

YORK has been called off due to ground conditions following huge amounts of rain falling on the course.

The JUDDMONTE has been rescheduled to be run on Friday, subject to suitable weather and going.

The problem is that NEW APPROACH may now not run, as he is scheduled to run in the Irish Champions race in 2 weeks in Ireland.

Given that York is going to be very testing and the race is likely to be very hard, assuming DUKE OF MARMALADE runs, connections may decide not to run in the race at York.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 18 August

Marmalade to take his chance in International

Tony O'Hehir

DUKE OF MARMALADE will take his chance in Tuesday's Juddmonte International, trainer Aidan O'Brien said on Monday.

Heavy ground at York had jeopardised the chance of the son of Danehill, winner of four Group 1 races on the trot, culminating in the King George at Ascot last month, taking on Derby hero New Approach in the race.

However, following discussions between O'Brien and owners John Magnier and Michael Tabor, the decision was taken to run.
The trainer said: "Conditions will be far from ideal for him but the owners are prepared to let him take his chance."

O'Brien also said that Hindu Kush, who had been declared for Tuesday's Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes, will run instead in the following day's Totesport Ebor.

- racingpost

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duke Of Marmalade a doubt for York, says O'Brien

Tony O'Hehir and David Lawrence

HEAVY ground at York is causing Aidan O'Brien concern in the run-up to Tuesday's Juddmonte International and on Sunday the trainer said Duke Of Marmalade "has to be a doubt" for the race.

A decision on whether the King George winner will bid for his fifth consecutive Group 1 is likely on Monday once the Ballydoyle trainer has discussed the situationwith owners John Magnier and Michael Tabor.

On Sunday at Leopardstown O'Brien said: "The ground is heavy and very deep. He's in now, but he has to be a doubt."

"It's far from ideal and will be totally against him, but knowing the horse he is, the lads might let him run.

"We'll talk about it tomorrow (Monday) and make a decision."

Coral reported good support for second favourite New Approach on Sunday afternoon and cut him to 5-2 from 11-4, having been 3-1 in the morning. Ladbrokes eased Duke Of Marmalade to even money, while VCBet suspended betting on the race. New Approach is as short as 7-4 with Boylesports.

However, the likely testing conditions have not dampened the spirit of jockey Johnny Murtagh should Duke Of Marmalade take on New Approach.

"I always say a good horse can go on any ground. I'm a great believer in my horse, he's tough and he's genuine. Every time he goes, he's ready to give you 110%," said Murtagh.

"It's a very exciting race and I'm looking forward to it. It's a clash of the titans and the best horse will win on the day.

"As I have said before, he's a horse that will die for you. He can overcome difficulties and this is one thing that might not be in his favour.

"It's a very hot race, I respect them all but fear nothing in the race," the jockey told At The Races. Nine others are set to line up for the £550,000 contest, including the Henry Cecil-trained duo Multidimensional and Phoenix Tower, and dual 2,000 Guineas third Stubbs Art, representingDavid Elsworth.

Drying weather at York on Sunday and the success of the first stage of the venue's new drainage system combined to give clerk of the course William Derby encouragement that the Ebor meeting would start as planned.

A downpour early on Sunday morning turned the ground to heavy, but new drains installed alongside the track this year were working well and a lot of the rain that fell was being channelled via culverts into the nearby River Ouse.

Derby said: "We had 25mm of rainfall overnight on Saturday, much more than the forecasters had told us to expect, and the ground is heavy.

"The weather is beautiful now, though, sunny with fluffy white clouds, and that's a big help to us.

"The new drainage that's already been put in is working in our favour, too, because it's taking a lot of the water away, which can only be to our advantage."

Derby was in no mood to make predictions about the weather for the next few days, having seen the forecast for his part of Yorkshire prove so badly wrong over the weekend, but he was resolutely upbeat about the four-day fixture.

He said: "We're hoping that conditions will improve before the start of the meeting and we've already put plans in place to move the rails going round the home turnon Wednesday night, to ensure fresh ground on that bend from Thursday onwards."

Saturday 16/08

Approach heads to York

Derby winner New Approach has been given the go-ahead to clash with King George winner Duke Of Marmalade in the Juddmonte International at York on Tuesday.

The colt was forced to swerve the Irish Derby with a muscle injury but everything seems set for a mouth watering duel.

“I have spoken to the owners and we have decided he will run,” explained trainer Jim Bolger.

“He worked well on Friday so he will go to York and I think that the ground there will be fine for him.”

Bolger’s charge is currently a 3/1 chance, while Duke Of Marmalade remains rock-solid on 4/6.

ST. LEGER

Frozen Fire 'far from certain' for St Leger

Brian Fleming

FROZEN FIRE, who is as short as 7-2 for next month's Ladbrokes St Leger, was described on Monday as “far from certain” to take his chance in the final Classic of the season.

Only Queen's Vase winner Patkai was trading shorter than the Irish Derby winner for the Doncaster race on September 6, and although trainer Aidan O'Brien said he is back in work after a break following his Curragh triumph at the end of June, he added: “We are thinking of giving him an Arc prep or a racecourse gallop before possibly going for the Arc. He's far from certain to go for St Leger.”

O'Brien was speaking by phone link at the launch of the Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes where he said that Duke Of Marmalade could bid to go one place better than in the race in 2007.

The four-time Group 1 winner was sandwiched by stablemates Dylan Thomas and Red Rock Canyon as part of a Ballydoyle 1-2-3 last year and he could spearhead the challenge for O'Brien, who shall be seeking his sixth Irish Champion Stakes win in nine years, on September 6.

O'Brien said: “The plan is the Juddmonte International and we'll then have a look at the Irish Champion Stakes. We hope to have him for the race and the others are all possibles.”

O'Brien is responsible for a dozen entries including Soldier Of Fortune and Henrythenavigator.

The Irish Champion Stakes has been mentioned by Jim Bolger as a possible target for New Approach's return to the racecourse while Dermot Weld has confirmed that his Epsom Derby third and Irish Derby runner-up Casual Conquest is on track for the race.

The potential British challenge is headed by the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Promising Lead with Godolphin's Rio De La Plata also figuring along with a quintet from the Henry Cecil yard that includes Phoenix Tower and Twice Over.

Betting Coups

Can't remember where I read this, but on a poor day of afternoon racing here is something interesting to read.

The Yellow Sam betting coup was a successful sports betting scam, infamous within Irish and British thoroughbred horse racing.

It happened at Bellewstown on 26 June 1975, and was orchestrated by Barney Curley, a Northern Irish professional gambler and entrepreneur. By taking advantage of an under-handicapped horse and the lack of easy communications between the Bellewstown racing course and off-course bookmakers, Curley made a profit of over IR£300,000 (€1.7m adjusted for inflation) - one of the largest betting coups in Irish history.

The coup
Yellow Sam was a "slow but steady" horse bought by Curley and was given his name from his father's nickname at the races. Curley instructed the horse's trainer, Liam Brennan, to train Yellow Sam specifically for the somewhat obscure annual National Hunt race at Bellewstown, featuring mostly amateur jockeys. To ensure that the horse would run at least once with a much lighter handicap than would normally be the case, Curley first ran the horse in a series of races on other tracks in unfavourable conditions.

Curley spent weeks developing the plan and putting people in place. On the day of the race, Yellow Sam's starting price was 20-1, but if large sums of money were being placed on the horse, that figure would drop quickly, drastically reducing the coup's potential take. It was for this reason that Yellow Sam was to race at Bellewstown specifically, as the track was serviced by just one public telephone and had no private lines at all – making it uniquely possible to disrupt communications to the course bookies who determined the starting prices for the participants.

Dozens of Curley's friends, acquaintances, and paid accomplices stood in bookkeepers across the country with between £50 and £300 and sealed instructions to be opened upon receiving a call. None of the accomplices knew beforehand which horse had been prepared, or in which race it was to run. Curley called six or seven of his people at 2.50pm, ten minutes before the race was to start, and instructed them to each call ten to twenty others. In all, Curley invested just over £15,000, his entire savings, in the gamble. Twenty-five minutes before the race was about to start, and fifteen minutes before the bets were to be placed, Benny O'Hanlon, a friend of Curley's in on the plot, walked into the telephone booth and pretended to place a call to a dying aunt in a non-existent hospital. His act was convincing, as the queue behind him waiting to use the telephone sympathetically allowed him to continue talking for half an hour, while off-course bookies desperately trying to lay off their liabilities struggled in vain to contact their counterparts on the course.

Curley had already built up something of a reputation during his years as a professional gambler, and knew that his presence at the course was likely to cause concern amongst the bookies, and possibly give away the scam before the off. Still, with so much at stake he wanted to see the race first-hand, so he crept into the centre of the course and watched the race concealed in a thicket of gorse. The gamble succeeded, with Yellow Sam winning the 13-hurdle race by two and a half lengths.

Since nothing about the coup had been illegal, the bookkeepers were forced to pay out the full IR£300,000 (€1.7m adjusted for inflation). They did, however, pay out the winnings in single notes, filling 108 bags.
